My sales job has become intolerable. Although I surpass the objectives that have been set for me and continually receive positive feedback from my customers, my manager continually criticizes me, gives me poor performance reviews and threatens me with demotion or dismissal. I'm afraid to leave in this economy, but I'm also afraid to stay in this environment. What do I do?

Example Answer

First of all, don't be discouraged by the bleak economic news. There is always a need for good sales people. Stay focussed on your success, keep copies of any notes from clients that state support your customer-focus and accomplishments and start to look for another job either within your company or elsewhere. Your first priority is to yourself. Document the conversations with your manager and also keep copies of poor performance reviews and criticisms of performance that you believe are unjustified. Go to human resources, only if your manager's behaviour is extreme and directed at other individuals who will back up your claims. It is unfortunate that workplaces become toxic environments during these tough economic times and it is important that you make the best decisions for you and that will mean looking at your personal situation to determine your best course of action. Get some expert advice, speak to family and friends and best of luck with your decision.
